AAH Codes and Standards Forum

The Codes and Standards Forum will provide a deep dive on the codes and standards that regulate nurse station design, including furnishings. The presenters will analyze how staff members actually use nurse stations in both inpatient and outpatient settings and identify conflicts between activities conducted at the nurse station and current code requirements. The forum will include discussion of how to resolve these conflicts in future published codes and standards.
Kaiser's Small Hospitals, Big Ideas, Part 2: The Next Generation

In 2012, Kaiser Permanente named two firms, Mazzetti and Aditazz, as winners of their Small Hospitals Big Ideas competition. The intended prize was the opportunity to design a new hospital embodying the principles of the winning submission. Facing the complication of two winners, along with a radically changed health care business environment, Kaiser changed course. Now, bringing together the two winning firms, Kaiser is transforming the way that health care buildings are planned, designed, manufactured, and erected. This session will enable attendees to:
- Describe how the health care business planning process and health care design process are being transformed through digitization.
- Explore how Kaiser is bringing new approaches to health care building sustainability to realize its next generation of health care design.
- Discuss techniques for collaboration among individuals and teams from diverse backgrounds.
- Apply the planning and design tools being used in the Kaiser project to your own facility.
The Safety Risk Assessment: New Requirements in the 2014 FGI Guidelines

The 2014 FGI Guidelines includes a requirement for a safety risk assessment (SRA) that incorporates previous requirements for assessment of infection control, patient handling, and psychiatric injury risks, while adding consideration of risks such as falls, medication errors, security, and immobility. A panel of industry experts with diverse backgrounds will review the new requirements and provide two owner perspectives on incorporating safety risk assessments into the PDC process. This session will enable attendees to:
- Explain when a safety risk assessment is required.
- Describe the required steps in the SRA process.
- Discuss how SRA collaboration in design improves project outcomes.
- List three infection prevention-related design considerations that could be proactively identified using the SRA early in the design process.
Extreme Makeover: Transforming Your Existing Facility into a Future-Ready, High-Acuity Hospital

Swedish Issaquah Hospital: Taking Energy Efficiency and Commissioning to a New Level

2013 Vista Award winner Swedish Issaquah Hospital is operating with a building Energy Use Index of 114, an energy savings of 40 percent compared with a basic hospital designed to meet code. The panel will present an overview of the hospital's innovative system design process, component selection, and owner/facilities team involvement. The presentation will include a technical overview of the systems, an in-depth look at energy modeling innovations required to accommodate the new system's thinking, and commissioning lessons learned. This session will enable attendees to:
- Compare available alternative technologies that result in significant energy savings.
- Explore an example of an operating, highly efficient hospital from the owner's point of view.
- Apply these new systems concepts to existing buildings.
- List the do's and don'ts for a heat recovery chiller system.
Become the Solution: Strategies for Value Creation in Support of Facilities

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is affecting all areas of health care operations. More than ever, facilities executives face the challenge of reducing costs and contributing to the bottom line. This session will highlight trends from regional systems, national systems, and academic medical centers as they make changes in response to the ACA. A case study provided of a world-renowned health care system will provide a process for organizational assessment and improvement. This session will enable attendees to:
