Mar 18, 2014 12:45pm ‐ Mar 18, 2014 1:45pm
The ACHA Legacy Award recognizes a health care architecture project that continues to demonstrate superior planning and excellence in design performance over an extended period. This session will announce the 2014 award recipient and provide a case study example of a project that used ground-breaking concepts at the time of its design and has achieved long-term excellence. This session will enable attendees to:
  • Describe how the original architecture and planning of the award winners' initiative has endured over the life of the project, while remaining flexible to subsequent additions and modifications.
  • Explain the owners and designers approaches to this project and the resulting architecture applied for its time.
  • Describe the historical context and the key drivers of this winning project.
  • Apply the principles used in the winning project for your health care facility's future planning and design.

This session is presented by ACHA.

Lessons from Toyota: Facilitating Decision-Making for Hospital Executives

Mar 18, 2014 2:00pm ‐ Mar 18, 2014 3:00pm
Building on the Lean culture developed at Toyota, Hoag Hospital has developed a process for presenting decision-making options to its C-suite executives that reduces costly mistakes and forces departments to consider alternatives using a simple, single-page tool. The presenters of this session will make the case for why better decision-making tools are needed in the health care industry, followed by a discussion of the A3 tools and examples on how they were used at Hoag. This session will enable attendees to:
  • Discover why better decision-making tools are required in the health care industry.
  • Explore how a health care organization applied Lean methodology to simplify the decision-making process.
  • Identify opportunities for reducing waste in your own organization through the discipline of Lean thinking.
  • Obtain a practical decision-making and communication tool for senior leadership.

Reinventing the Wheel: Innovative Solutions to OR HVAC Design

Mar 18, 2014 2:00pm ‐ Mar 18, 2014 3:00pm
Patients in surgical environments are vulnerable to contracting infections. The operating room HVAC system plays a vital role in minimizing the number of infections carried into the room. This session will compare the various operating room HVAC system types, using graphical representations of each to demonstrate their pros and cons. Both new construction projects and renovations will be covered. This session will enable attendees to:
  • Evaluate operating room design conditions and strategies.
  • Discuss current codes and the governing bodies associated with operating room design.
  • Describe desiccant-based dehumidification systems and how they are implemented.
  • State the requirements for smoke evacuation systems and describe their implementation.

Creative Interior Design Solutions in the Military Health System: Using Evidence-Based Design and Sustainability

Mar 18, 2014 2:00pm ‐ Mar 18, 2014 3:00pm
An interior design master plan, including the latest evidence-based design (EBD) research and sustainable design concepts, is essential to improving the overall patient experience and creating a stress-free environment. To accomplish this, interior designers should be involved early in the planning process. Using examples from military health care facilities, this session focuses on the strategic aspects of the interior design plan and will enable attendees to:
  • Explore how the latest Unified Facilities Criteria provides direction for using EBD and sustainable design research with the World-Class Checklist.
  • State eight EBD goals for selection and evaluation of furniture and finishes.
  • List the challenges to providing interior design requirements very early in the project.
  • Discover how the use of checklists can help interior designers gain approval for new solutions, concepts, and products.
