Flexibility has become “table stakes” in the planning and delivery of a facility. But is it really beneficial in the ways that we assume? Does it survive the process of operationalizing the facility? Are we investing in the right kinds of flexibility? This session will evaluate the notion of the flexible building block from design to operation by examining the nature and value of flexibility from the facility and end user perspectives.

This session will enable attendees to:
  • Identify change factors that impact flexibility goals during design and construction.
  • Explore the potential for influencing final design by anticipating key changes early in the process.
  • Describe how the design process can change in terms of participation, timing, and decision making to preserve flexibility goals.
  • Determine when the process of transition to operation in a new facility should begin.
