The pursuit of operational excellence must focus on not only meeting short-term goals, but also assuring that improvement processes center around the mission and resiliency of the organization. This session provides operational excellence principles and specific examples of methods that health care physical environment leaders are using to invest in and derive the greatest value from the physical environment to create a culture of operational excellence.

In this session, a panel of various AHJs, surveyors and standards developers will discuss trending compliance issues. Hear the perspectives of professionals who regulate hospitals daily on topics ranging from accrediting bodies’ increased focus on infection prevention to common life safety citations. Panelists will provide insight on the regulations, why they are important and how attendees can get involved in shaping the future of health care.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the approach for ensuring compliance with Joint Commission Infection Control Standards.
  • Review infection risks associated with the environment and key interventions.
  • Identify best practices to decrease infection risks.
  • Provide examples of situations that could lead to survey findings and adverse accreditation decisions.

In this session, ASHE's codes and standards experts will discuss emerging codes and standards issues facing health care facilities and offer answers to specific questions. Attendees are invited to ask questions about any of the codes and standards related to health care facilities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the code compliance issues that health care facilities commonly face.
  • Discuss changes needed in health care facility regulations and how to support efforts to enact them.
  • Identify the means of meeting NFPA 99 and NFPA 101® requirements that often result in survey citations.
  • Explain the unique and important role of health care professionals in the development of codes and standards used to regulate health care facilities.
