Every year an estimated $20 billion is spent and approximately 75,000 people die as a result of healthcare-associated infections in the United States. The solutions that will eliminate HAIs must include a collaborative effort in design thinking by all constituents. In 2015, seven multidisciplinary firms entered a design competition to prevent HAIs and then joined forces to form The HAIO Patient Room Challenge Group.
