John D'Angelo MD, FACEP

Senior Vice President & Executive Director, Emergency Medicine Service Line, North Shore-LIJ Health System

As Senior Vice President and Executive Director of the Emergency Medicine Service Line, Dr. D’Angelo is responsible for the clinical and operational performance of North Shore-LIJ Health System’s 15 emergency departments, hospital based observation units and a rapidly expanding network of urgent care centers; an operation that touches close to 800,000 lives per year and spans throughout New York City, Westchester and Long Island. He works closely with Health System Senior Leadership to integrate and standardize clinical care across the health system. In this role, Dr. D’Angelo continues to shape the future of emergency medicine in the Northeast region. Dr. D’Angelo led the team that opened the first free-standing emergency department in Manhattan; Lenox Health Greenwich Village, a project that included all aspects of starting a healthcare organization from the ground up and spanned three years in development. He is also currently directing the design and flow of the plans for two newly redesigned emergency departments at Southside Hospital and Huntington Hospital, both of which are currently under construction. Dr. D’Angelo also serves as the Medical Director for SkyHealth, a joint venture between North Shore-LIJ Health System and Yale New Haven Health System, offering state of the art emergency helicopter service that provides patients the most expedient and safe route to, and from, any medical facility in the New York and Connecticut region. He is also currently the Medical Director for GoHealth Urgent Care, a joint venture between North Shore-LIJ and GoHealth that plans to open 50 new urgent care centers in NYC, Westchester, and Long Island over the next three years. Dr. D’Angelo is also serving as clinical sponsor for the Sunrise Emergency Care (SEC) project at North Shore-LIJ, coordinating all phases of enterprise design, including the creation of a best-practice Emergency Department workflow that will be incorporated across all health system emergency departments. Previous to his current role, Dr. D’Angelo was Chairman of Emergency Medicine for Glen Cove Hospital. While in this role, Dr. D’Angelo took the lead in several key health system initiatives. As the co-chairman for the North Shore-LIJ Sepsis Task Force, Dr. D’Angelo was instrumental in spearheading the system’s sepsis initiative to identify patients with this potentially fatal condition at an earlier stage and implement aggressive treatment measures. Dr. D’Angelo also took the lead in a collaborative between North Shore-LIJ Health System and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, which was charged to work together with all system emergency departments in order to become highly reliable in the execution of detailed sepsis bundles. Dr. D’Angelo’s contribution has garnered national recognition, as evidenced by North Shore-LIJ receiving the 2014 John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality for reducing sepsis mortality by 50 percent across the entire health system. In addition to his practice of emergency medicine for over 17 years, Dr. D'Angelo has served as medical director to numerous EMS agencies throughout his career, and served in the United States Army Reserve from 2001-2011. Dr. D’Angelo received his medical degree from SUNY Stony Brook and subsequently completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA.
