Amit Bhansali is a distinguished Senior Vice President and one of the Healthcare Practice Leaders at WSP, a global engineering and professional services firm. With over 15 years of experience as a licensed professional engineer, Amit has made significant contributions to the field of healthcare design and construction. His expertise spans across 18 states in the U.S., where he has led a variety of healthcare projects, including complex renovations, expansions, and new greenfield facilities. Amit's career is marked by his leadership in several high-profile healthcare projects. Currently, he is serving as the Chief Mechanical Engineer for the design and construction of a 2.5 million square foot adult hospital for Indiana University. This project is notable for its emphasis on future readiness, flexibility, and resiliency, ensuring that the facility can adapt to the evolving needs of the community it serves. Additionally, Amit is also leading a team in designing a hospital in California capable of operating in island mode for 72 hours in the event of an earthquake and continue to provide critical services. Amit is deeply passionate about advancing healthcare design to be more future-ready and resilient. He actively influences design standards and practices through his involvement with ASHRAE. As an active voting member for ASHRAE Standard 170, which focuses on the ventilation of healthcare facilities, and as the chair of the Interpretations Subcommittee, Amit plays a crucial role in shaping the guidelines that ensure safe and effective healthcare environments. Beyond his project work, Amit has contributed to the broader industry through his participation in the development of key resources and guidelines. He recently served on the review committee for the ASHRAE/ASHE Co-sponsored Decarbonizing Hospital Buildings Guidebook, a critical resource aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities. Amit is also dedicated to mentoring the next generation of engineers. He is currently involved in writing Chapter 09 on Healthcare Facilities for the ASHRAE Handbook, providing valuable design guidance to new engineers entering the field.
