Mara has more than 20 years of experience in design, education, research and writing. She has focused her career on sustainable healthcare architecture, targeting very low or zero energy/carbon buildings that also enhance and support occupant health and wellbeing. Mara has helped to design tens of millions of square feet of built inpatient and outpatient facilities, all of which targeted carbon emissions reduction and sustainability strategies. A longtime industry volunteer, educator and author, she has also contributed to numerous guidelines, reports, and other documents published by ASHRAE, the US Green Building Council, the International WELL Building Institute, the American Institute of Architects, and more. She has been on the online faculty of Boston Architectural College since 2006, where she currently teaches two courses, “Sustainable Design for Healthcare Facilities” and “Green Building and Health”. Mara was elevated to Fellowship by the American Institute of Architects based on her impact in advancing sustainability in healthcare design.
