President, Institute for Patient-Centered Design, Inc.

Dr. Thompson is a licensed architect, interior designer, and design professional with 25 years of experience in health care design. She is the president and founder of the Institute for Patient-Centered Design (IPCD), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care environments through research, education, and co-design with stakeholders. Dr. Thompson has built this grassroots organization to become a trusted authority on patient-centered design. In 2013, Thompson was recognized as Healthcare Design Magazine’s first HCD10 Foundation Executive and honored with Engineering News Record’s Top 20 Under 40 distinction. In 2016, she received the American Institute of Architect’s Academy of Architecture for Health “U-40” distinction, honoring only two individuals under the age of 40 annually with the most significant contributions to the profession. In 2021, Dr. Thompson was named one of three Beryl Institute Research Scholars (the only American scholar) for her doctoral dissertation entitled Caring for Care Teams: Nurses Thriving and Innovating by Design. In 2022, Thompson was honored a second time with the HCD10 Award – this time as an industry MVP for her work in health equity design. Dr. Thompson develops and delivers professional education to health care stakeholders and consultants through interactive workshops held annually.
