CMS currently enforces the 2012 edition of NFPA 101 for health care organizations that are certified to receive reimbursement for patients covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Some states already require compliance with newer editions of NFPA 101. The session will highlight the cumulative impact of changes in the 2015, 2018, 2021, and anticipated changes in the 2024 Edition of NFPA 101.

Some of the changes that will be addressed include: increased size of non-sleeping suites, increase in smoke compartment size, and changes to the locking requirements that will benefit behavioral health units. In addition, significant changes to the reference standards will be identified including to better clarify the scope of the annual inspections for fire doors.

  • Identify at least three significant changes in NFPA 101 that will be beneficial to health care organizations.
  • Identify at least three locking arrangements that will be beneficial to behavioral health facilities.
  • Identify how changes in the FGI Guidelines have impacted requirements in NFPA 101.
  • List at least three significant changes in the reference standards between the 2012 and 2024 Editions of NFPA 101.
